The 7-Day Breakup Reset

Seven days to reduce impulsive contact, separate facts from assumptions and work out whether your next move should be contact, more space or moving forward.

Day 1 — Stop treating every feeling as an instruction

You do not need to send a message simply because the urge to send one is strong. Give yourself one day in which no relationship decision has to be made.

Day 2 — Separate facts from assumptions

Write down what your ex has actually said and done. Put guesses such as “they must miss me” or “they never cared” in a separate column. This immediately shows how much of the distress comes from uncertainty rather than evidence.

Day 3 — Revisit the breakup reason

A relationship cannot be repaired by contact alone if the underlying problem is unchanged. Was the breakup about one event, repeated conflict, trust, incompatibility, distance, commitment or something else?

Day 4 — Review the current contact pattern

Warm, voluntary conversation is different from practical messages, late-night breadcrumbs or arguments. Look at the pattern rather than the message you most want to believe.

Day 5 — Decide what outcome you actually want

Reconciliation, closure, reassurance and relief from loneliness are different goals. Be honest about which one is driving you.

Day 6 — Decide whether contact would create clarity

Ask what one message is likely to achieve. If the answer is “I need them to make me feel better,” more time may be useful.

Day 7 — Choose one calm next step

That may be continued space, a low-pressure message, a clear boundary, or accepting that the relationship is not currently workable.

Important: if the relationship involved abuse, coercion, threats, stalking or fear, do not use reconciliation tactics as the priority. Focus on safety and appropriate support.
